Seven causative suffixes for one language: the case of Wolof

Sept suffixes causatifs pour une seule langue: le cas du wolof

Résumé

As most Atlantic languages, Wolof (Senegal) has a very rich system of suffixes for verbal derivation (up to 40), with sometimes very fine grained distinctions inside categories. For instance this language has 2 applicatives, 3 reciprocals and… 7 causative suffixes, in addition to the 3 verbs used for periphrastic causatives. In this paper, I present this remarkable system with 7 causative and try to sort out the distinctions or subcategorizations made in Wolof for causation
